5th November - Guy Fawkes Day

Guy Fawkes’ Day is a celebration that takes place every year on 5 November in England.

It is also known as Bonfire Night .

Three different things make this night special. There are bonfires, fireworks and guys or dummies on top of bonfires .

Children make a dummy using old clothes , newspaper and straw .
The dummy often has frightening mask. Then children burn it on a bonfire.

Asking for "a penny for the guy” is a way in which children can collect money for fireworks .

Children also learn a poem at school

Today there are usually amazing firework displays, concerts or parades in some parts of Great Britain.

Here you can see photos of London fireworks on 5th November

The events take place on the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot from 1605. On the night of November, 5th Guy Fawkes and other Catholics wanted to blow up the Parliament   ( where Big Ben is), but King's soldiers arrested Guy Fawkes. They put him in prison, where he died.
